One For The Birds

Yesterday definitely took it out of us.  DH and I both didn’t get up until around noon and we were jut wiped out all day.  We didn’t even get it all done.  Insert violin, because yes, I am whining here.  This dang yard work is akin to housework.  Never, ever, ever, done.    Whah!!!!

I do like putting the garden in, but cleaning the weeds out of beds is really no fun.  We need to clean out one last bed and then finish up the others and lay mulch.  The one last bed that is really bad needs to be totally re-done.  We’ve been talking about what do with it and the butterfly bush keeps getting mentioned for the center and then different perennials for around the outskirts.  Unfortunately we weren’t in any condition to tackle that today and our Mantis seems to need a tune up, so we’re going to have wait until next week.  I’m hoping a lot of work this year, will only mean a little work next year and beyond as we just do maintenance.  I do have to say that we worked on the front hard last year and I noticed that was a lot easier to keep up this year.

So after DH and I busted our humps and worked so hard last night we went out to check our handy work and found a bird pulled out and munched our cucumber plant.  Above on the bottom left is what it looked like pre-bird munching.  They also tested the pepper plants to a less extent.  We ended up finally getting out this afternoon and finally got the new cucumber in with netting over now.

We also planted some herbs and I planted a pot of lettuce and carrots.  DH always complains how I don’t like carrots.  I like carrots a lot, when they are sun kissed and tender from the garden, not tasteless and rubbery.  Thankyouverymuch.  We’ll see how they all do.

In the meantime, my clemetis is doing well this year and this big snow ball is a monster.

I’m waiting for it be done blooming before I cut it back.  My poor peony is being totally crowded out there.

  • I saw some gardener posting how he kills off weeds and weed seeds by covering his plot with clear plastic and leaving it for a couple weeks. It’s supposed to bake everything dead and do most of the work for you. If it gets hot enough to kill the seeds then you have less weed sprouting. I might have to try that next year.

The bridal wreath and the clematis are gorgeous! My clematis is the tiny white fragrant flowered one that blooms in the fall.

I remember having a snowball bush in the backyard where we grew up. It got invested with ants and to try to kill them we ended up killing the bush. I loved that bush. yours is beautiful!
